Lamas – Wayku Indigenous community

In the town of Lamas is a community of descendants from the pre-Inca culture, ‘Los Chanca.’ In Wayku you will see traditional dancing in the center and can buy local products, food and artisanal crafts.  The local shops mostly sell natural products, highly recommended. Waska Waska Warmi Wasi is a center that helps to promote ancestral knowledge while protecting the local habitat through the use of natural materials. A group of local women ‘Quechua Lamista’ offer courses in natural dying, weaving with a Loom, ceramics, weaving with cotton and jewelry using seeds.

Castle of Lamas

Lamas is divided into stepped levels that mirror the colonial impact of the Spanish Conquest. The top of the hill was claimed by the Conquistadors while the lower section, the Barrio Wayku, was reserved for the native inhabitants, the Pocras and the Hanan Chancas
The Castle of Lamas looms over the folkloric capital, a towering culture clash in the midst of historic Lamas.  The castle is an educational experience, primarily focused on arts and crafts, both European and local.  It certainly provides a fair dose of fantasy and fun.  The ‘Castillo de Lamas’ is certainly worth a visit and the panoramic views from the top are Stunning.
